About Us

Cantilena was formed in 1987 by a group of friends as an informal singing workshop.  Today the choir has around 30 - 35 members, including a number of founder members, who simply enjoy getting together to sing.

Our objectives are to be a versatile and fun choir whilst working to improve our vocal skills, expand our musical knowledge and achieve a high standard of ensemble singing.

Our Repertoire

Our repertoire ranges from the works of classical and contemporary composers to folk songs, spirituals and popular songs from the 1920s and 30s.  Further details of the works we have performed can be found in our Previous Concerts section.

Our Concerts

We currently perform four concerts a year, including a carol concert in December.  Our concerts take place in some of the beautiful parish churches in the East Devon area and usually include a themed interval lunch or supper, all home cooked by choir members!

Wherever possible we try to donate any money raised at our concerts to local charities.  In recent years we have been able to support the Children’s Hospice South West, the Devon Lupus Group, ELF (Exeter Leukaemia Fund) and the Red Cross.

Other Musical Activities

We are also invited to perform informally at other local events (such as flower festivals and blue bell walks) and each Christmas go carol singing in pubs in the Broadclyst area to raise money for local charities.

At the end of our summer season, we also hold a Choir Barbecue, which usually combines good food and drink with some informal late night singing!

Cantilena is affiliated to Making Music, which represents and supports amateur music making.
